Conveying Tone in a Text only Format

it's funny, aint it?

Wednesday, August 2, 2006 by Bandit4edu | Discussion: Community

I've been here a while and have ran into the same problem a couple of times on the forums...how can you tell when someone is funnin' and when someone is actually being serious? How does one relay sarcasm in a text only format?
I believe I have found an answer and want all of you folks to know that 98.7% of my posts will, from this point forward, contain the following picture

If you run into a forum post of mine that does not contain this picture after the date of this post, then you can acertain that I want you to take all the verbage contained in the post seriously...however, if the picture is present in the post, then know that any and every word of the post can be disregarded as a feeble attempt at humor or sarcasm. I am happy to provide this service and if you wish, you may borrow my picture for use in your own posts at anytime. Now, there we go, problem solved and all is right in the world again...carry on Skinning people!

Well it's definitely noticable. I think I would go with something a little more compact myself.

I find that the site smilies come in handy for this

Yes, cavan...but as you can see above...the smiley for a guy in a baseball cap and sporting a moustache doesn't work on this forum.

What I had tried to post was...

It may be a 'challenge' to do so, but it's a perfect opportunity to hone your communication skills and mastery of English Expression.

The odd smilie helps.

Oversized imagery such as above is unwarranted and undesired, not to mention a waste of space, time and bandwidth...

c'mon Jafo......YOU DO KNOW I WAS KIDDIN' RIGHT!...do you guys actually think I was gonna host a big image and throw it into every post...c'mon, guys, they trust me to teach college students...can't y'all trust me to use a bit of common sense and once in a while post a joke? It was informational only...wasn't really gonna dump the forums full of smart*** images...oh, joy...the more posts here, the more the point of the origional title of this thread is made

Don't think you need to worry Jafo:

In the post, he says he'll post that image when he means to not be taken seriously; since that image is present in this post, that means he's not serious about posting that image elsewhere in the forums...
