Tell us what you'd like to see in Object Desktop

Wish lists forum welcome!

Thursday, September 21, 2006 by Frogboy | Discussion:

Greetings!

This forum has been created so that Object Desktop users from around the world can get together and tell us what they'd like to see in Object Desktop.

A lot of changes are coming to Windows in the next several months with Windows Vista in development. And we want to make sure we're here to serve your needs as users of Windows XP and eventually users of Windows Vista.

So if you have a new program, a tweak, a change, or anything else for that matter, let us know.

Thanks!

That takes a few seconds per cursor, and I have a pretty large list...
If I'm looking for a particular cursor that I don't remember the name of I could spend 10-15 min "clicking through the list" if CXP doesn't crash from me trying to change to fast.

Documentation! User manuals, actual information in the Help files, getting started tutorials for using the programs, not just skinning them. I love the looks I can get with the various Object Desktop programs but I waste endless time poking around to see what they can do or trying to track down answers on the forums. Even a Read Me file with something in it besides permissions would be a start. Expecting user forums and tutorials to carry all the weight for such complex (and expensive)programs strikes me as a little lazy. I do realize these programs aren't intended for general users, but give us a little something, please!

P.S. Thank you to all the people who do take the time to write tutorials and post on the forums. What little I've been able to figure out about using these beautiful but frustrating programs is thanks to you.

Ah, finally found the feature request thread

I would like to see the following in Object Desktop for Vista:

-For TweakVista: A way to fix/restore system folders to their default looks. On another system I managed to mess up several system folders by deleting the desktop.ini files, and I had to do a reinstall to fix it. I'm especially thinking of the Fonts, Program Files, and user folders here.

-A way to add items to the /right/ side of the start menu, like is avaible to system manufacturers like Dell.

-For Stardock Central: a way to hide all non-Vista capable applications! It will happily let me install WindowFX, IconX, RightClick, Enhanced File Dialog -- which do not work right (or at all) on Vista.

I love the wallpaper changer in the WB config window, but, it only displays the resolution of the images. I would like to see the NAMES of the images, and the ability to list them alphabetically, or by date added etc.....
Just thought..... maybe you can already do this. If you can, someone please tell me how.

Boxxi try Quickchanger filters are great things.

As for what I'd like to see in OD, better support for multiple user accounts IP, EHD, etc...

I hope I'm not duplicating things listed above, but there have been many requests over the years related to RightClick as far as being able to save off packages of different types of RightClick configurations to be called upon as needed. I did like the idea mentioned above to have added intelligence to RightClick to be able to have different menus and options based on monitor and/or in conjunction with SD Virtual Desktops to have it know what to do based on virtual desktop that you are on....Fix the bug in RightClick that causes drops of existing configurations settings and submenus that you have added.

I was just wondering what happened to Sound Packager or was that dropped, or did you decide to make that a vista app?

When was the last time you opened SDC

First,I'd like to be able to actually buy it on a CD in a COMPLETE form; not a small collection of out of date components that forces you to download the whole thing anyway, and thereby forces you
to learn how to archive, and then dig into Program Files to find the archives to save the files, and then reinsert them, and then restore them.(Apparently there are no plans to offer an actual version of Object Desktop, even though it is claimed to be a "snapshot").
Second, a Theme Manager-centric format for the purposes of applying the individual components one or two or more at a time in conjunction with it's whole theme application format. This would save having to learn the quirks of each program unless you wanted to do something more complicated. It would open up the world of skinning to the casual user. It could utilize the built-in viewers of IconPackager,WindowBlinds, LogonXP,Sysmetrix, etc., and maybe incorporate a viewer of it's own to look at downloaded screenshots for things like cursors.
Manuals and more manuals.Just getting the thing requires a manual. Using it is worse; no two components act in the same way. Like any complicated program,it requires study, but doing simple things should be made simple to do, and that's not really the case now.

Hey Willstuder . . you sound kinda frustrated.  Is there anything that you still need help with or have you figured everything out already?

Digital distribution is the name of the game.  The CD really isn't the best way to keep clients up-to-date and save money (that can be spent on developers).  The CD is a snapshot of ODNT on the day it's released. The same way a game or an office suite is.  After that, updates are done via the web.
Having said that, you are not required to archive or restore.  You shouldn't have to go into program files either.  If you have to restore, just right-click on the app in SDC, choose restore, and pick the version you want back.
a Theme Manager-centric format for the purposes of applying the individual components one or two or more at a time in conjunction with it's whole theme application format.
On the left side of Theme Manager 2007 are most of the ODNT apps.  You can select them one-by-one and then if you feel like it, save them as a Theme.  Are you looking for something different?
Manuals and more manuals.
These app *CAN* be complex.  Hopefully the Wiki will address some of the new user issues.  I'd like to see a link in the About or Help section of each app that goes to the wiki.  I think that would help tons.

Zubaz, thanks for your time. I'll try to be concise. I'm new to skinning, I'm a user. I went looking
for a launcher and found ObjectDock, then Wincustomize, then Object Desktop. I bought Object Desktop, saved $10 and spent about 24 hrs. downloading it ONE piece at a time. I then needed to move it to a new computer. Do I buy a CD or find the archives by poking around in Program Files & other places, not knowing where they were? (You are advised to put them on a CD by Stardock when you buy OD). I found them & put them on a CD, so you have to know how to find things in Program Files to do that. I decided to buy a CD and install them that way. I waited until after WindowBlinds 6 was out to make sure I got it on a CD. You are told that you get a snapshot of Object Desktop; that means to me that you get Object Desktop, that is, all of the components. I got WindowBlinds 5.0 (not even 5.5), an equally old version of IconPackager & Skin Studio. I forget exactly what else is on it. I opened Stardock Central and saw what was there: nearly nothing. I had to verify who I was. I started downloading. At least two more times I had to verify
who I was; at basically every new program, I had to agree to something in order to proceed to the next download. After a few hours (dialup), I made a list of some of the things NOT on the CD:
IconX, Object Edit,Object Sweeper, Object Bar, DeskScapes (understandable, to a degree), Tweak Shell, Tweak Vista (again, somewhat reaonable) & Stardock Bitmaps. I may have missed some, because I waited awhile. That isn't a snapshot, and where is WindowBlinds 6, which on the very same page you order the CD from, I believe, had a countdown screen announcing it's pending arrival. I think it's reasonable to expect to get v.6. I spent two days watching it download because it doesn't load by itself.
I eventually contacted Sales, and their reply was that there still isn't a release date for a CD that includes v.6, and, that it's unlikely to include the entirety of Object Desktop when that day arrives. I can't figure out why not. So; you can't actually get Object Desktop on a CD, and downloading it is a cumbersome step by step process.
For Theme Manager, I'd like to see it as the applier of themes, as it is now, and individual components (not having to make it a theme). That is, to act as IconPackager, for instance; to be able to view the package, or WindowBlinds skin, etc., and apply it in the manner IconPackager or WindowBlinds does. I'm looking for a central skin application tool to make it easier for a newcomer to change any or all skins the same way from one location, that logically being Theme Manager in an expanded version. The whole thing is knowledge intensive, and scares off most people.
I'm sure it could eventually be made easier to get, and easier to do the basic things like applying a skin.
To show the state of my knowledge, I'd like somebody to tell me how to find the codes for DX weather widgets, and how to apply them.
All this doesn't detract from the fact that Object Desktop is wonderful thing. If I've got it right, there are only 40 employees putting the whole thing together. That would be amazing.
Thanks

I would like to be able from WB's interface under Change my Wallpaper
to not have all images show up that are NOT wallpapers or too small for the resolution that is set at the time.

#2
still in WB interface under
Change explorer toolbar icons
and
Change how my animations look
have it not to install the Same one over and over and over and over at which this takes it forever to load (you know how some skins use the same animations and or the same toolbar

#3
Have WB's not install the same Skin when it is already installed.
and when the artist has an update to a skin WB should be able to uninstall the old and then install the new update.

#4
A manual That tells in details of ever Program of OD and all of it's setting of EACH program. Like Have a Help button in EACH programs interface.
Example: In WB's interface --> Look and Feel --> Fonts then right click on --> I do not want shadow and effects used on controls. etc.. etc..

#5
Be able to change the color of the font not only to change the font.

#6
To be able to change the look of ONLY this skin
it has to change the look of ALL skins
oh this is under
In WB's interface --> Look and Feel --> Colours --> and Tansparency and Blur

#7
even though Cursor XP is not part of OD I do like the ideal of being able to see it like the skins In WB.

#8
a Sept by Sept instructions on how to make a skin that includes
All info needed to do in Photoshop too and I know most would be more then happy to pay Extra, well I would, with crystal clear video (not fuzzy) DVD would be nice that way we (I) could watch it on my TV and work on the computer. and if you would need a tester for this I would do it as for I have NO ideal on how to make anything in Photoshop, well I can resize a wallpaper.

#9
???

thanks

Willstuder,
Once you are an ODNT subscriber SDC should be teh way to get all your apps.  The CD is a nice wayt to get the base files so that SDC only has to update what is new.  Having said that . . many of the apps change quickly nad you may have all new files.     If you can provide the link where the text indicated it was a daily image, I'll see if it can be made more clear.

The fact that each app in th suite is a seperate download can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the type of user you are.  One huge download (like you want) removes a significant amount of choice from a user that may not want evey componant (like Stardock bitmaps. . . which are just logos I think).  Maybe the missing feature you are missing is a "Download and install everything" option.  That might be a good addition (if rarely used)

For Theme Manager, I'd like to see it as the applier of themes, as it is now, and individual components (not having to make it a theme).
It does that.  Start a new post and maybe someone can walk you through it.
To show the state of my knowledge, I'd like somebody to tell me how to find the codes for DX weather widgets, and how to apply them.
Most DX objects use weather.com codes.  Use the code in the URL affter looking up your city.

Hello Zubaz,
Stardock is selling a snapshot, not a daily snapshot. (https://www.stardock.com/products/odnt/cdsnapshot.asp)
Installing from a CD is faster and less knowledge intensive than the Stardock Central download method or the remove archives and reinsert archives method. The same choices made using SD could be made installing by CD. Updating by SD I like.
For Theme Manager: I know I could install an icon package that way by creating a theme, a slow process. I mean-Go to Theme Manager, click on IconPackager, see preview of icon sets, make choice and apply, and to be able to do that for WB skins, or logons, etc. Most people only apply skins, and only need an applier. I'm thinking of a central application tool that previews and applies all skins of all programs, making it very easy to juggle different combinations without having to have all the different programs open at once. Then you can create a theme, if you want. For anything more complicated, use the specific program.
I also didn't get Sound Packager on the CD. I still want everything in a convenient package, in fact I want CursorXP, Logon Studio and Bootskin as well on the same CD. I know they aren't Object Desktop components, but who cares. Call it something else, but allow me to buy everything together.
What is the thinking in making it hard to get. Ive been talking to Support and Sales, and it looks like there is no interest in even putting all of the Object Desktop components on a future CD.
I'll try weather.com. I've almost always got Nurnberg,Germany on mine. At least they look good.

Thanks for your attention.

There is no need to create a theme if you don't want to:
  1. Click on app
  2. Click on name
  3. (preview)
  4. OK
