Wincustomize Download Guide

WinCustomize has a wide variety of skins and themes for nearly every aspect of your Windows operating system. From animated wallpaper for DeskScapes all the way to skins for WindowBlinds, from cursor themes to icon packs, we are the site for finding the best themes to use with your Stardock applications. Since we have a massive amount of available downloads, we've created a guide that explains what software is needed (if any) in order to use these great skins and themes.

I’d also recommend subscribing to WinCustomize. Once you become a subscriber, you'll have access to unlimited downloads, ad-free browsing, and discounts on Master skin purchases.

Become a WinCustomize subscriber here.

Galleries
When you want to browse the galleries on WinCustomize, the "explore" button on the site is the best place to start. Clicking here will take you to an overview of our featured galleries, which showcase the most popular categories on the site. You can also get a list of the galleries by hovering over the "explore" button. If you're a WinCustomize subscriber, you can customize this menu to show only the galleries you want to see.

When you click to view a gallery in WinCustomize, the gallery you select will have a description telling you which software (if any) you need in order to use that particular download.  The screenshot below highlights the description area.

In the screenshot above, we’re looking at the WindowBlinds gallery.  It gives you a brief description of the software and links to the product page required for that download. If you don’t already have that application, you can download the free trial from its site. If you are interested in customization and productivity for your desktop, I would recommend checking out Object Desktop. This is our suite of over a dozen desktop applications. You can see the benefits of being a member here.

To download a skin, just click the Download button on an individual skin page. If it is an item that requires the use of an application then read more about that below.

Software
While we have a variety of downloads available on WinCustomize, these are some of the most popular applications that users come to download skins and themes for.  Click the links to find out more information about the product and to download a free trial.

Many other downloads will be contained in a .zip file, which you will need to extract once downloaded.

Master skins
WinCustomize creators who have reached the rank of Master are able to sell their skins on WinCustomize. These premium skins are available to purchase, but if you are a WinCustomize Subscriber then you will get a 20% discount on the purchase of these skins. When browsing the galleries, Master skins will have a special badge indicating they are from a Master skinner. You can also use the filters in the galleries to only show Master skins.

Some downloads go right where thy should and then some you download and have to know where to put them. That was the confusion for me.

It was/is the same for me,but I figured it was all part of the learning curve.WB's self install for the most part and .dockzip is a wonderful ,but under-used thing. Otherwise,"Some assembly required" is not unusual. I extracted so much into the wrong places,I unzip to desktop now. Please don't mistake some "tilted"(putting it mildly) humor as unfriendly, eventually you get a straight answer. The new Help pages will be a valuable asset for newcomers.

Screensavers typically go into c:\windows and/or c:\windows\system32.  If they download as a 'scr' file than that's where they go...if they are an 'exe' they will install for you...

Dreams and Screensavers based on mpg files need a mpg codec to work or you will get a black screen or a message from MS saying you are missing a codec. Vista Ultimate is the only windows with default mpg support as it is used in DreamScenes but many movie type programs like PowerDirector install one and purchased DivX with extensions installs one too so many people have one already. One is not installed with Deskscapes or with .Dreams so if you are missing it it is your responsibility to get one. XP media Centre does not have one by default. Search for mpg codec and it is best to get a MS approved one and not one in a multi-codec pack - these can destroy other MS approved codecs, especially ffdshow and it takes over all files it can open and it is bad at many of them. It will stop TMPGEnc from doing a good loop when making dreams in mpg as well.

Do not leave comments on Dreams or ScreenSavers that all you get is a blank screen - get your codecs sorted; Dreams and ScreenSavers have been through moderation and do work if your system is up to scratch and you have the necessary codecs.

Vista Ultimate is the only windows with default mpg support

Vista Home Premium comes with built in mpeg support also.

I have a simple one hopefully, can someone tell me why my Windowblinds skins are downloading the files straight to my desktop (severly clogging it)? As a note, it does download to Windowblinds and is available for use, but the actual files seem to copy to my desktop.

I don't see a way to do a copy as, or direct the files to another location and with all the files it adds (30-40 for each skin) I definitely don't want to drop and drag into a folder each time.

Any ideas? Running Windowblinds 7 on a Windows XP system.

thx

Jasmine Rogers you may want to start a new post and call it - Windowsblinds downloading to my desktop - or something like that than ask the same thing you did here.

The orginal thread is from January 18, 2007 3:31:26 PM.

That may have just a little to do with it.

I'am amazed that people didn't already know that, but this post should help many.  I'll bet we'll still get posts and irc questions.

Got it, will do. I run a ticket queue at my company as well and typically we try not to open new tickets if we can reply to a related issue, but I'll open a new one in this case; since as you said, this one's pretty old.

thx
