Features? Products? Changes?

Monday, August 18, 2008 by Zargon | Discussion: Object Desktop

Planning for Object Desktop 2009 has begun and we want your help.

Got an idea for any of the products that are part of Object Desktop?

  • Looking for a feature?
  • Looking for a new product?
  • Want something changed?

This is the thread for you!

Some thoughts:

  • A consistent look and feel for all the components configuration windows.
  • Pull more of the components together with simple on/off toggles for the bits you do/don't want.
  • Consistent skinning (one setting affects all) across as many components as possible.
  • Another vote for PNG format / alpha blending for RightClick
  • An ObjectDock Docklet for SVD (oops sorry, ObjectDock strikes again)

Attention animation when an application's title changes (like someone IM'ing me in gmail+gtalk).

Thumbnail preview when hovered over an open application, like on the taskbar in Vista.

I don't use theme manager, so I do not know how it works, but it would be nice to see the most used apps for OD set up in an all-in-one user interface.  You could go through it and set up your windowblinds or MyColors, iconpackager, choose DX (widgets, objects, or themes), Sound packager, Log On, Deskscapes, etc.  Maybe even ObjectDock set ups, all from one, maybe tabbed interface, then save the the whole theme to be used later without having to open up and select everything individually.  I don't know if theme manager allows you to save an entire theme or not, but it would be nice to change a theme, then go back to one that is most used, change parts of it to create other themes, and save everything.

CursorFX does this in XP (and I think in Vista)

Why would CFX do that Aaron? Don't you mean WinFX? Because I tried out winfx specifically for that purpose, but it was buggy and quickly dumped it.

Place adding new stuff to WB and SKS on hold, fix what is broke to the best of your ability.. start adding new stuff again.

I kneel at your feet and praise you, vStyler.  God save us from new 'features.'

I'd like to see a Bootskins for Vista....so I can stop using Tuneup Utilities for the boot screen.....thanks.

First off I want to say thank you for all of these suggestions.  I have been reading through them, but it has been a busy week here at Stardock so I have not been able to respond.

Bootskin for Vista?  I think we can do that one for sure.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Don't discontinue/forget RightClick would be my greatest wish.

Right click will get a freshening for 2009.

Republican for president.

If you think we hold sway over the White House....

then you are finally starting to get the picture.

For Icon Packager, the ability to save some specific icons regardless of the package. ( or do we have it already, just that i don't know of it ?)

You can do this with IconDeveloper if you have ODNT Ultimate.

i think the first thing to do, is finish updating apps for vista, that had release dates of last year. lets not go crazy adding all kinds of new stuff when several of the old apps don't work yet on vista properly

This is a general goal to either move applications forward when possible (and support 64-bit, that is a focus for us in 2009).  However some applications like IconX are just too difficult to pull off in Vista.

WindowFX however may be a possibility we will look at for 2009.

Mike (milksama)and myself are looking at a way to do this through DX but is there a way to make the frame builder in SKS6 have a stand alone option and maybe natively support png and gif as well.

If you have time take a look here and see if it is possible. If not I would be happy to help work with it as an app to be added to ODNT Ultimate!

Thank you

i'd like a software added that can change that dam windows startup tune
SoundPackager already supports that.

And windows also allows for that. At least XP does.
