Impulse Weekly Roundup - May 28th
Friday, May 28, 2010 by Island Dog | Discussion: PC Gaming
We are on the verge of a long holiday weekend, and Impulse has a ton of great sales to keep you occupied for the next couple of days. Before we get into all the sales, lets re-cap some of the highlights on Impulse this week. First up we have some DLC goodness for the hit Splinter Cell Conviction. Titled the Deniable Ops Insurgency Pack, it delivers several new co-op missions for you and friend to play through.
Next up we have the pre-orders open for Need for Speed World. This action driving MMO will let you play with your friends or against them and thousands of other players in an open world setting. By pre-ordering through Impulse you get several exclusive bonuses including access to all remaining beta events, access to the Head Start Event, increased XP, VIP status, and more!
Another item to mention is Prince of Persia – The Forgotten Sands pre-order. If you are heading to the theaters to see this, then I recommend picking up a copy of the game to play through yourself when it is released. If you pre-order through Impulse, you will also get Prince of Persia Warrior Within free!
As I said before, there are a ton of sales going on this weekend, and most notable is Sins of a Solar Empire for just $4. There is no excuse not to get this, and it’s also a perfect price to grab a copy for a friend or family member. Aside from that, there are more games and applications on sale and you can see the full list here.

Finally picked up the entirety of GalCiv 2 from the huge discount. Much love for you folks there.
I always really, really wanted to get into Sins, but I could never play it for more then a few minutes by my lonesome. Maybe the expansion packs will change that. . .
Here Stardock, have more of my money. You've earned it.

Anybody played Gatitutious Space Battles? Been thinking about trying that for a while.

Yeah, I got it when it was on sale a couple months ago, but just the base game, none of the expansion. The product description is right, it is basically a combo of RTS+Tower defense. The ship builder is a lot like the one in GalCivII, you have a limited amount of space to put on weapons, engines, power generators, crew compartments, etc. As you play the game, you get "battle honor" which lets you unlock more componets. There isn't much in the way of customizing how your ships look, though.
One thing I didn't like is that the additionaly races are unlocked by getting lots of honor, and you only start with one. By the time I had enough to unlock the next race, I was rather bored with the game. The races are mostly differ only cosmetically, but you do get sick of watching the same ships over and over.
Overall I'd say it's a pretty good game, but not worth the full $40 for all of the expansions. For $20, though, it's probably worth it. One other thing to mention; once you start the battle, you have no control over what your ships do. Some people might like that, others won't.

The demo version of Darkness Within 2 left me pretty impressed. Fantastic atmosphere. I'm definitely interested in picking the full version up soon.

I couldn't pass it up for $20 for the main game and all 3 DLCs. I liked the review of it on Impulse TV. Then I found there is a demo of the game on the developers web site so download and check it out if you aren't sure.
It's not something I'd play all the time but it's good for a quick distraction here and there. Great game.

Bought the half-price Prince of Persia (the cell-shaded one), and look forward to downloading it tonight. I was hoping to see Beat Hazard, but alas! Not yet!

Yeah I checked out the demo once I realized it has one (suggested improvement for Impulse: indicate that on the game page). I greatly enjoyed the demo, so at this price it's a definite pickup for me.
Thanks folks!

Yay! I already bought Sins - which I've been thinking about getting for a long time - and Prince of Persia. And all for less that $15. Hooray for holiday sales and hooray for Impulse!
