Fences 5 First Update is Rolling Out

Bug fixes, localization, and more

Monday, December 4, 2023 by BradSams | Discussion: Fences News

Today we are releasing a new update for Fences 5 that improves stability while squashing bugs. If you're eager to get your hands on the latest version, the update is currently being rolled out and can be manually checked for by accessing the Fences 5 configuration panel.

To get the update immediately, navigate to "About" and select "Check for Updates."

With this update, we are moving closer to dropping the Release Preview tag from Fences 5. In this update, there are improvements to localization, snapshots are now more resilient to monitor ID changes when the snapshot is saved vs loaded, fixes for Fence spacing in the config menu, and a lot more.

Fences 5 is the best way to keep your desktop organized. With powerful features that automatically sort files into a fence on your desktop to Folder Portals allow you to mirror any folder to your desktop, once you experience Fences, it will quickly become a core part of your workflow.

After installing this update, if you run into any bugs, make sure to let us know by joining the conversation in our forums and we are also on Discord.

And if you haven’t tried Fences 5 yet, you can download a free trial or if you are looking for the ultimate Stardock bundle, make sure to check out Object Desktop too.

I'm subscribed to the Object Desktop, and When I install Fences 5 it wants me to upgrade, but my Object Desktop license is current. So whats up with that?

Again and again and again and again (The Cure, 'A Forest')

WHY can't we keep this setting to how it was before every update? In my case it is always set to 'off' because I want it to.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, it is best if you could show me what/where that setting at so I can try to understand your issue is?

Thank you.

It is simply the setting to Show/Hide Fences at startup. I always set it to off. After EVERY update it is set to 'On' again since ages.

Okay, I saw it, I just update my Fences to v5.04 and the tick do reappear but it was gray out and there is no Fences or Icons appear on my desktop. Here is what my desktop look like on startup. All fences and desktop icons are hidden. As previous set. Is this is what you saw on your desktop?

Thank you,

No, it is the same very time. It stays off during work and normal on/off times (switch the lap off at night), but everytime, there is an update it is switched on again.

Is there a place I can view a change log for release 5?

Carl, have you tried these settings:

When the two options marked above are selected, the "Always show icons at startup" gets greyed out.

I had never see those options myself , since they remain hidden until you tick "Automatically hide icons when the desktop is not in use"

I tested this by selecting the [after 10 minutes] option. I wouldn't want my icons to vanish automatically myself, but 10 minutes is also a long time.

I can also confirm the icons do not show up at start up IF that selection is chosen before automatically hide icons is Enabled

That is not, what I want. I simply don't want Fences to show after startup after an update and keep that setting. I have reported this plenty of times.

Thanks for the workaround but that is still not a fix. It is frustrating at times how bugs like these are ignored for years that should be easy to fix.

I think my problem still is not understood. Every new version of Fences keeps all settings except this one, which is stupid.

The Beta thread was closed with this as last post (which was not my 1st complaint). That is plain ignorant, sorry.

Sometimes it is really exhausting trying to help here.

Fair enough. You did in fact find a bug and it deserves to be treated as one

I have also notced what you have reported (and you are right), but updates aren't that frequent that I have given it much thought.

I have to agree.

With products like start 11, Groupy, and Windowblinds Neil seems very engaged with the community and very in tune with what the user base is wanting. But, with the Fences line there does seem to be an absence of that, almost as if feedback is not very important with this particular product.
