The perils of Googling oneself.

Tuesday, January 11, 2005 by dharmagrl | Discussion: Internet

I was lacking anything else constructive to do (well, that's not entirely true but that's what I'm going to tell y'all) so I Googled my screen name this morning. Link

Yeah...not a really good thing to have done.

My illusion of being the only Dharmagirl on the planet were shattered.  There are a few of us...and some of us seem to be into some pretty kinky stuff.

There's the Dharmagirl who's listed herself in a adult personal ad site.  Looking at this one was scary at first because she's the same age as me -my first thought was that I'd pissed off someone who had enough personal info on me to create an ad like that using my details - but then I read further and saw that she's in NY state and only has 2 kids, whereas I'm in the midwest and have 3.

There's the Dharmagirl who's registered in the BDSM chatroom.  I have to say that while my personality might suggest otherwise at times, I'm certain I'm not into bondage and domination sex.....and I sure as hell aint submissive.

Then there's yet another Dharmagirl listed at yet another bondage site.  What is it with chicks named Dharma liking getting tied up and beaten?  I'm seeing a trend here, and I don't like it.

Next comes the Dharmagirl who registered with a Des Moines animal welfare site...now that's more like me.  I could see myself doing that.  This one gave me some hope that not all dharmagirls were kinky sex fiends.

There's another Dharmagirl who has a blog that shows up on Google.  I couldn't open the link to go see what she's like.....I'll keep trying though.

My final visit (and the one that made me want to stop looking for more) was to dharmagirl.com .  Yeah....not really me either.  Cool if you're looking for porn, I guess......but the less said about that, the better.

So, I'm not the only dharmagirl...and most of the other Dharma's are into some questionable sexual practices.

I just hope no-one gets us confused......

By googling my name, I discovered that I play basketball in New Jersey, canoe, play baseball, work as a janitor in a Catholic school, am a principal of another school, and died at 41

Dude, you've been busy!  How ever do you find the time?

Googling my maiden name produced someone calling me a "witch, which should be spelled with a B."

I was popular in college.

Holy cats......that's led me to wonder just what in the heck your real name is!

Googling my maiden name produced someone calling me a "witch, which should be spelled with a B."

I was popular in college.

Errm..yeah, it would apprear so!

The real me still clocks in the top two results. I'm proud of that.

I'd be pretty dang proud of that too!

Barring those results, though, I'm also President & Director Center for Automotive Research, with a Master's Degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering. Not bad for a guy who knows nothing about cars.

Nope, not bad at all.  Kinda like me..the clog wearing Buddhist wanna-be hippe being the dominatrix with the cat-o-nine-tails and the handcuffs.....although i will admit to owning and having used handcuffs, but it was purely in the line of duty.  Really, it was.

Really.  Honestly....it was.....

Googling my nick finds... me! And other heraldry stuff, because that's just about the only place you use 'essorant', other than when you say "oh, not another skin by...".

Ick. I googled my real name once, and found a really old Sonic the Hedgehog fanfic that I wrote when I was ten or so. This would have been bad enough by itself, but then someone had to go and MST3K it! Hilarious, but humiliating.

As of yet, I'm the only Lotherius on the entire internet. There are a couple of reference to some Frankish noble over a thousand years ago by the name, and that's it. I came up with the name years ago, in an AD&D induced haze, for a character who was a Drow Elf born in an area very much like ancient Rome.

Aelfwyne, my other common handle, is almost as rare. There was a very popular Aelfwyne who was a member of the SCA, I found out, and most other aelfwynes got their name from him. I got mine from an etymology of my RL name (Alvin)...

My RL name + my last name (which is a good english sounding name, just not very common) puts me clearly in the lead on its owners as far as the internet is concerned. What's this mean? Not a darn thing, except that I'm extremely easy to find on the internet, as my old high school classmates discovered when they began putting together a list of people for the 10 year reunion.

I like being unique, actually. I used to go by "elfren" - a shortening of Elf-Friend to fit in the early net/BBS days where many logons had to be under 8 characters. Then as the internet began to reach other parts of the world, I discovered that "elfren" was actually a common name in the phillipines, I think it was. So the net was suddenly flooded with other elfrens, and I had to give up the name because I won't be one of a crowd.

My username only gave one match to a user at DeviantArt. But under my real name there were two obituaries (one for a trumpeter in Austalia), I also play keyboards in a reggae band and I'm a Rotarian who supports a Children's hospital. At least no porn or weird kinky stuff.....
