well if the progress bar locks up/freezes during the bootup process you have a pretty good idea that windows is stuck and you need to power cycle your machine to get it going again - without the progress bar you're stuck looking at your image saying hmmmm... is windows taking it's time or is there a problem here....
Progress bars do in fact have a purpose, leaving them out is definitely your choice but I wouldn't say they don't have a purpose.

Yes, I do like the movie unclerob, and you're right I suppose they do serve a purpose but it's decieving. I've sat at progress bars that move for a long time before when it was hung up yet it's still moving. I keep my computer maintained enough to know when something is hung up too long. I don't need a progress bar to tell me when the boot is hung. Do you?

I can put a progress bar for those that would prefer to have an image tell them that there is a problem if you want...

They're ugly and don't tell you anything about "progress".
