I love the animations in the Forecaster! I'm frustrated by my inability to change to Fahrenheit. It just keeps showing 17 Celsius without changing today's temperature. The high/low temps for the extended forecast are Celsius also, which is meaningless to me.

Could you please tell me what I'm not doing right? Many thanks!

Have you tried double-clicking on the current temperature (which highlights when you mouse over it)? Doing so toggles all temps between fahrenheit and celcius.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I tried double-clicking, and I got the Fahrenheit temp for a couple of seconds, then it went back to Celsius. The numbers for the five days didn't change at all, though. I made sure WeatherBug, which I sometimes have in my tray, was closed. I'd much rather use your Forcaster if I can make it work! (

Good news! I restarted Windows XP and installed the Lite version it's working beautifully, with all Fahrenheit numbers, and now I can even see the moon spinning there (it was daylight earlier). Really beautiful! I'm afraid to turn it off! LOL LOL

Mabey your dxpack was corrupted or were having some other problem. The code for the Lite and standard versions is 100% identical. The only reason one would work any differently than the other is either corruption, or system problems caused by some other issue such as low memory. The only difference between the two, at all, is number of frames in the moon animation and therefore its memory footprint.

In any case, I'm glad you like it.

I more than like it I find myself sitting here and staring at the animations! Thanks again! LOL

I have two problems with this beautiful forecaster.
First off, the real moon doesn't spin. I don't care how neat it is to see it spin, it's unnatural.
Secondly, I use the F10 key to hide it and your Sat & Radar object. After a few minutes of being hidden the Sun or Moon part appears on the screen and stays there.

Sorry, but the moon does spin.

Feel free, instead of criticizing, to use the UltraLite version, available at https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=3&SkinID=3588 which features a non-rotating moon.

If you don't care how neat it looks, I guess you shouldn't use it. As for your F10 issue, by invoking that feature it's the responsibility of DesktopX to inhibit screen updates of an object while it is "hidden". Sounds like you've found a bug in DX you should talk to Stardock about.

I tried to temper my observations by saying it was a "beautiful forecaster" but I guess your too sensitive.

Yes, you are correct the moon does spin but from the perpective of an earthling, the same side always faces the earth. This is what makes your display seem unnatural.

Here is another observation: I hide this object during the day. At 11:00 pm I observe the unhidden moon spinning and I use F10 to unhide the rest of the object. Now the sun is showing on your object and it stays that way for more than five minutes.

I would think that since you're more familiar with the techical construction of your object, you would be the one to report the hide bug...

Your semi-nasty reply to my comments makes me regret that I assisted you with the sat&radar not saving the localization settings. http://wincustomize.com/window.asp?Cmd=COMMENTS&Lib=34&SkinID=60

My semi-nasty reply to your semi-nasty comment? Whatever. Blame your offensiveness on the listener. Your comment was a criticism based solely on your own aesthetic judgement, not to mention superfluous since I already offered versions for people of both animated and non-animated tastes... Something you didn't bother to check out before criticizing, so yes, it was offensive.

On the sat&radar, you reported a bug (which wasn't even a problem with my code but rather the result of an undocumented change in a new DX version), and I'm the one who responded and fixed it. You're right, you deserve all the credit. You act as if the fix was for my benefit... It was for yours. You had a problem and were willing to follow up on troubleshooting, so I wanted to help you. That's why it got fixed.

I can't report the F10 bug, as I've never seen it and have no data on it. Stardock has the code for my object, but I don't doubt they will realize that the issue is in DX. It sounds like DX can have issues with objects that try to change their visibility when F10-hidden. It wouldn't surprise me if some mail-notifiers behave in a similar fashion. Feel free to report it.

Bottom line: thanks for reporting and following up on the issue with Sat&Radar, and you're welcome for my fixing it. I found your comment on this object to be rude and ill-founded (I've had a few of those lately and it set me off), and I responded in a way that let that show. As the injured party, I will not apologize for that. Beyond that, let's let the matter drop. I do appreciate any _constructive_ technical comments people make, such as your F10 observation, even if there's nothing I can do about them.

I'm glad you like it, aside from the rotation. You'll undoubtedly find the UltraLite version less irksome.

Cheers...

Just to let people know, there will be an update to all the LookingGlass objects in a few days that will rectify a couple of issues, as well as add a couple of neat features. One is being able to select your forecast location by name (e.g. "Sydney, Australia") and the other is a surprise, something I _think_ no other weather object has...

This is just beautiful and fascinating to watch! However, being the dummy that I am, I can't figure out how to set it to my city! Help, please?

Just move your mouse over the currently displayed location (notice that it highlights) and click (or doubleclick, depending on your DX settings) to open the "Set Location" dialog.

Maybe my download was corrupted, because mine doesn't highlight or do anything when I click it!

Wonderful object. Couple of questions for you though: I get a random script crash occasionally: if t>89 the "Hot" or something like that. I commented out the line in the script and now it works fine.

I noticed your comment that there's a post 10/6 version I can't find it up on Wincustomize.

Does your 10/5 comment on DynBitmapCaching still apply? The key is not currently in my registry at all I've lost track of DesktopX updates, so I don't know if they're still using it or not.

Thanks!

Stephen: Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Regarding the t>89, questions like this are more efficacious if you give the script error and line # where it occurs (which the error dialog gives you.) I haven't seen an error that matches your description, but if it exists it must be because either 1) weather.com returns garbage for the temp (I will release a patch that includes this) or 2) some weird DX bug. If the patch doesn't cure it for you, it's #2.

Re the "10/6" update, where you must mean 10/8, you did find it. This object you're looking at was so updated. Wincustomize doesn't always change the "updated" date.

Re DynBitmapCaching, this is really a question for Stardock. They know if they've messed with the internals of DX. However, I would think it wouldn't hurt to still make the reg change. I use it myself.

In the new version that was posted today, I've put in a preventative measure against the "t>89" issue Stephen referred to. I have not seen it in extensive testing, but an error was possible if garbage was received from weather.com. Such garbage is now digested without complaint.
