Well, to be honest, if you want to make good looking spheres you really do need to use layers and all. I did, and I use Fireworks! 
The tutorials only look long and confusing because they're telling you every step they followed to get the sphere to look good. If you read one and follow it a few times you'll get the hang of it and be able to do it yourself in a jiffy.
Think of it this way, if I can learn from a tutorial (which I did) I'm sure you can too. LOL

I have been trying to learn to make sphere icons so i can put my insert in them. Do you know of an easy way for me to learn or site to check out that is a beginner site? I have Adobe and Corel but their tutorials seem so long and confusing, layers and all. Your Icons are the BOMB! As in the best!
