For those of us who use Type 1 fonts, there are two files for the basics and two others for the Multiple Masters: The PFB and PFM files are your basic font and metrics files. For the Multiple Master fonts, the PSS file is the font instance and the MMM is the metrics file. (Watch out, MMM is also taken as a "media clip" by some applications). Of course the FON file is covered by the "A" icon. Another Adobe font, the PFA file, is (I think) for the somewhat outdated Type 3 font. There are other font files, such as the editable but not usable files that are saved out by the proprietary font-editing programs, Fontographer and another, whose name escapes me even though I own it (shows you what I think of it). Information can be found on the boards for these products, all three of which are conveniently sold by the same company. (Macromedia sold Fontographer shortly before they were bought by Adobe. I have mixed feelings about this: hopefully it will go back into development -- but by whom?) Sorry for my cynicism: an excitable young man becomes a cynical old man at the hands of moneygrubbers who -- oh, never mind! Hee, hee, hee, hee, hee!
Take care!
