This docklet should work through a proxy, including those that require authentication with a name and password. It was tested both through a corporate firewall and through a home Linksys router without issue. Tested on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
You should not need a static IP address or other special open ports (other than the standard port 80 or 1080). You *do* need a valid DNS server (as would be needed to surf the web).

I chose a transparent icon for my background to make it a little easier to read. A solid black square may be even better. Fonts are a little hard to read w/ the black border.
This is very cool.

Downloaded Microsoft's (january)monthly updates, specifically the MDAC update, rebooted and now the dockfeeder objects won't download.
Any ideas?

My only complaint is about the fonts and the text. the outline around them is random them to me ...I don't know if it will be white or black depending on the color. also it would be nice of the text could scroll so I could see more of the message.

But it just displays "Retrieving RSS Feed" and after a while CPU_usage goes up to 100%.

I get the same problem where it retrieves the feed but then doesn't display

- Fixed XML parsing to be less title/link ordering dependent.
- Corrected tab order in the configuration dialog.
- Updated network code to use Winsock 2.
- Removed "US English" language preference in HTTP request.
- Added SOCKS4 proxy support, as an alternative to HTTP proxies.
- Added ability for user to semi-customize font anti-aliasing.

Please check the following (with v1.10):
1) Make sure the network connection is up and running and normal web surfing works (dial-up users need to be connected).
2) If some sort of special sockets library is being used (some of the dial-up services with "network acceleration"), this may be incompatible. Disable any such software if possible.
3) Make sure the location where the Docklet is installed is user writable; DockFeeder needs to create a temporary file where it stores the RSS feed. If write permission is not allowed on this volume, this will fail.
4) Make sure the proxy configuration is correct! This must be "None" if no proxy is being used, or the correct setting if a HTTP or SOCKS4 proxy is being used. Fill in the name and password fields only if these are required. Do not use a proxy unless one is needed for your network.
5) If ZoneAlarm or some other piece of software is disabling network access for the Docklet, the Docklet must be given permission to access the Internet.
6) If one receives the "Server reply was not an RSS feed" message, and one is using one of the supplied feeds, the server has either banned the client IP address or there was some problem retrieving the data from the server (likely a 4xx or 5xx error). If this occurs for all feeds, check the proxy configuration.
Hope this helps; if someone wants to try and trouble shoot this, a debug version of the Docklet can be provided as well.
