Just some random thoughts for all of the laptop owners out there.
Since first downloading Object Desktop 2 months ago, I've been like a kid in a candy store. Once I realized that 1280 x 1024 works just fine for my small 1280 x 800 res, there was no looking back. Like most people here I wanted to personalize my PC, get away from the boring Windows format, spice it up with some eye-candy, and actually improve my productivity by making my computer more functional and user friendly.
After a few weeks I settled down and started to realize what absolutely needed to be seen at all times, and what could wait until I toggled it. I cut my teeth learning how to manipulate and tweak these desktops with a couple from Buzzh58 and several from Gef. I was happy with the results and progress I was making except for one thing - lack of real estate for working since it appeared the only way I could get everything I wanted was by having both a task bar AND a side bar.
Which brings us to this desktop, which I created by taking bits and pieces from several of Gef's creations. I eliminated the side bar and put everything up top. And I mean everything. The only thing I couldn't fit in without it looking crowded was a single large icon.
And the best part was that this configuration takes up 20% less space. I could have made it even smaller by losing the large icons and using smaller buttons, but where's the fun in that? Which is another trade-off of course but one that I'm willing to live with.
If any of you with 1280 x 800 res screens have come up with similar solutions/compromises, I'd love to hear about them.
BTW the WP is by digitalblasphemy and can be found with hundreds of other FREE 1280 x 800 WP at
