Would you mind sharing what technique/software is used to create these walls, I just can't guess

Well I just usually start out in Adobe Illustrator 8, then export some of the shapes into Photoshop 6.0. I play with the lights and shadows quite a bit, and on chainmail, quite a lot of hand airbrushing was used to link the elipses together.
