- the planet and "comet" or whatever that is would be more pronounced if those stars weren't present, giving the entire picture a more "out of this world" feel to it. - at least IMO

'Fairly simple to make' Not one bit. I spent many hours of different days trying to get all the components as I saw them in my mind.
Just so people can understand a little bit about how I go to create a design such as this one.
I get a 'vision' of something (in this case a nightfall scenery)
I then kind of 'freeze' the image in my mind
Most of the times I do a quick pencil sketch to have a more visible proyection of what I want in the design.
With this image, I used Terragen because it renders terrains better than Bryce does.
I created the terrain after tweaking for hours with the Terrain Genesis settings. I didnt want the mounds too bulky but with enough body to cover the horizon.
The texture was also done from scratch and it took me a while to get the slope the way I wanted them. Notice the childs have more of a thick 'crust' over a 'muddy' field. The coverage, noise and altitude was also taken under consideration to give it a 'uniform' spread over the entire terrain.
The water 'foam' was done with Sorta Surf, but the accented top layer was created with a few overlays in PS7 as the 'foggie mist' was.
But what I really, really like about this design is that it came out exactly as I visioned it in my mind.
Total amount of time from mind vission to save final image: 17 hrs

I have to disagree with you on the star field tho'
Look at the elements of the design.
1)Nightfall
2)Moon on the horizon
3)An almost clear sky
4)A falling star/comet/unknown object
Not putting in the stars would be a sin
