The white circle is necessary to make the transition from the sharpe texture of the center to the soft texture of the edge work. The blured outer area is to allow icons there to work well.
However, the circle was initially much more subtle, but I foolishly saved a flattened version when it was wrong and had to recover things by adding this thicker line. In hindsight, a less harsh colour might have been better with the line having to be thicker. Oh well, I still like it over all.

Based on the comments, I've put some effort in to tone down the white rim - anyone think it's still too much?

This is in my opinion a much better wall than the rating would suggest.
