Kitty, have you thought about not having the menu buttons look so much like, err, buttons? You can apply a single bitmap background to the whole menu button area so there is no clear 'separation' between menu items.
This is usually accomplished by making a single bitmap in Photoshop with the whole menu in it, then you split it in three: the top part becomes the titlebar bitmap, the middle part the menu button area bitmap (applied to the whole menu button area) and the third part becomes the endcap bitmap.
