WC2k8: The Upload Process - Your Thoughts?
Let us know what you want to see!
Tuesday, May 1, 2007 by Zoomba | Discussion: OS Customization
One area we've decided is in need of some tender, loving care... and a rather serious overhaul... is the upload system.
Our upload page has been largely unchanged for quite a while now. And while it serves its purpose, it's neither as friendly, nor as robust as many what other sites on the net user to allow users to upload content. The time has come to spend some time and energy to bring the upload system up to speed with the rest of the site, and with the rest of the web. We've spent time going over sites like DeviantArt, Customize.org, Flickr, MySpace, Photobucket etc to see how they do things, and what we might like to use over on WinCustomize. But, at the end of the day we're not the ones who will really "live" with whatever is finally implemented.
So, before we start the deep dive into designing and developing a new upload process, we want your views and opinions on what you would like to see included in a new upload system. It can be additional options, it can be technical features on the page such as batch-uploading etc. We want to know what the artists and regular contributors most want to see in the submission system.

In the past, journeymen would "update" their work by simply hitting the "reset date" check box, in an attempt to keep their skins at the top of the recent skins list. Requiring moderation for updates pretty much eliminated that method of gaming the system.

*THAT* sounds like grounds for demotion, not fixing the game. Social engineering vs. system.

Also, I think that having to "ZIP" everything isnt the best idea. I package some things in self-exe's and some as just the dxpack, or exe so that people dont need to download, unzip, and then run.

That's pretty much my take.

Just maybe a way to add a "invisible" message to the moderator in case of update

I don't upload much, but that sounds like a good idea.

I like the new upload system because you can see the upload progress and how many minutes it will take ect.......saves sitting around looking at a screen and wondering and waiting....

IE:
First Upload 1.0
Edit and upload the zip 1.1 - 5/03/07 12:33 pm
Etc.. So that when i look at something i could see if i missed an update?
and i like the idea of having a field where you can tell the mod what was changed in an update, or send them a note, or even cash. LOL

Also, a way to format the description, it would be nice to be able to use LIMITED html bold/underline/bullets, etc.
i like the new uploaded, seems to work.
Any chance of changing that even if your a journeyman you still need "approval" for updates, but not for initial uploads? It doesnt make a lot of sense to me to allow me to upload anything i want, but not be able to make an update to it.
