Stardock Central Clarification
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 by DorkCoffeez | Discussion: Stardock Support General
There have been multiple responses from many different Stardock Representatives and community members about the status of Stardock Central and Impulse. At this time I would like to clarify the situation as it stands. This is of course subject to change but this is the current situation at the time of this posting. Any changes I am made aware of I will post here as well.
Impulse is the new downloading tool for Stardock software, games, published games, and store front. It will receive priority in all new downloads and updates. There are a great many plans for updates to the software including tools, features, and so on. If you have not already, we encourage you to make the switch.
Stardock Central will continue to feature updates for Stardock software only at this time. This will not include games, even Stardock original ones. However WindownBlinds, Icon packager, and so on will still have the updates made available to them as a service to our customers.
As I said any of this is subject to change but as it stands right now this the policy regarding these two free tools. I do apologize for any inconvenience in these matters.
As always if you have any troubles or questions you can let us know at support@stardock.com.

I too have been losing ability to update Object Desktop and Object Dock Plus apps it seems for some time now. I do have Impulse installed as of a few days ago and likewise that's how I know that the apps have fallen behind. My SDC is 2.54.524 build 167.

Theme manager is at version 2.50c. The last set of digits are different but this is not an update. The last set of digits are for developer use only and do not have any major changes involved. Think of it as the filing system.
The version listing for Skin Studio 6 is the same on both systems. For Skin Studio Pro only the last set of digits have changed and, again, this is not a real update.
SDC has updates published to it right around the same time as Impulse in nearly all cases for everything except games or Impulse only 3rd party software. We keep them both like this for our customers use. If you have any troubles getting your download please let us know at support@stardock.com. We would be more than glad to help.

Are there any plans to add actual skin browsing/downloads to Impulse. I love that bit in Stardock Central and it's missing in Impulse. Or am I the one missing things? =P
I know you can hit the "Gallery" link but that takes you to the site which is a lot slower and involves a lot more clicking than the galleries in Central hehe. Yeah, I'm a lazy bugger.

THings make a little more sense now, and of course the dates on a lot of these apps are newer in Impulse just because they've been turned out as .impulse right? However one thing though as IconPackager 4 (beta) shows as 4.09(.003 as installed in SDC but also shows 4.00.165 as available, an earlier build. I do have SDC set to show pre-release builds.

Also, it would seem that all WinCustomize theme files, windowblinds, icon sets, etc, should all be under the parent C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock, and those mentioned above are there. Right Click themes are not, nor are dreamscapes or DX themes.
I think Impulse is great and I look forward to all the changes being talked about. It's a great delivery system for Stardock and WinCusto

Will do in Impulse 3.30 (our next phase).

It sounds to me like you should use Impulse, for games only, and SDC for everything else.I for one use both at the present, and want it kept that way.

Fact is though that Impulse isn't for just games. It features great software for many different things. Some of them are internet security software programs, art programs from the Corel series, and more of Stardock software products like Multiplitiy. Impulse is an evolution in downloading software. As of right now there are no plans still to do away with Stardock Central so if you feel more comfortable please feel free to use both.

Seabass, I'm still not seeing the latest Iconpackager in SDC (last version showing is dated 6-6-08). Is this something on my end? Or has it still not been released to SDC?
Maybe I'm misunderstanding this thread but as I understand it, only games are being held back from SDC?

My system default browser is Firefox and I've got that setup to allow scripts, cookies, etc. for various stardock related domains and it works peachy as far as allowing scripted content and remembering my site logon/passwords via the white-listed sites I visit.
However, I've not yet sussed out which domains I need to allow wrt using Internet Explorer through Impulse. The situation currently is that at the launch of Impulse when I click the Community tab, it shows me as logged in to the site at the top ("Aesir Rising", with options to Log Off, go to My Account, etc.). When I, for example, click the link for the Featured Article Impulse fails to keep my logged in status. Which domains do I need to whitelist for scripts and cookies if I wanted to respond to blog comments, visit other Impulse community member blogs, etc.? I don't wish to enable scripts and cookies globally, but would be ok with whitelisting the necessary domains. So far, I've got impulsedriven.net and impulsedriven.com whitelisted. Which domains am I missing?

Well the entirety of my post wasn't needed. Yes Impulse will be the only location for games, but SDC will contain all of the current versions of Object Desktop. As of this writing I am looking at both SDC and Impulse. Both are running Icon Packager 4 at version 4.00.168.
The current Beta for Icon Packager 4 is being tested through Impulse at this time. If you would like to participate in the beta you will need to download through Impulse.

Hey all. I finally broke down and purchased Object Desktop Ultimate. I'm currently using Eminence. I love it.
Anyway, I'm just curious what to do with my serial # I got in an email. I downloaded Impulse but wasn't prompted to enter my serial # anywhere. I have full access to Impulse, but I'm a little worried that since I didn't enter my serial # anywhere that my subscription will expire prematurely. The serial expires tomorrow.
Sorry, if this is the wrong thread/forum for this topic. I'm just a little concerned.
Thanks in advance.

avenuePad,
Impulse automatically registers your software, and so doesn't need to prompt you for the serial. Neat, huh?

One more thing, about SDC and Games... you can still download any games listed on TotalGaming.net via SDC, in fact the current versions of GalCiv II (all three parts) are the same version as in Impulse. For now.
So, new and old purchases of the game can still use SDC and install GalCiv II to the currect version. Future updates will not be published to SDC, but rather only on Impulse.
