ObjectDock 2.0 - First Sneak Peek
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing
One of the most asked about applications is ObjectDock. Specifically, people have been wanting to know about ObjectDock 2.0. Some have speculated that we have simply given up on ObjectDock, and that is simply not so. It is in development, but since it is early there is no time estimate about release, nor about upgrading.
First off, what is ObjectDock?
Objectdock is a smoothly-animated, customizable 'shelf' on which you can place shortcuts, docklets, system tray icons, and view running applications. The program is available in two versions: Plus and Standard. The Plus version offers multiple docks, tabbed docks, and a unique feature called flyout menus. The free version, while still demonstrating the capabilities of the 'zoomer' docks, limits you to only one dock. You can customize ObjectDock to be anything from a taskbar replacement to a fancy docklet-filled information center.
ObjectDock is certainly one of the most popular desktop applications around, and a lot of work is going into the new version. Maybe in another week or so, a video might be in order.
Let me make note, this is an early screenshot and is still subject to changes in the final version.
With that being said…..

Sweet! I love ObjectDock! I can't wait for this. Will it have full 64-bit compatability?

This really brings the UI in line with most of the ODNT family. It appears to be very clean and easy to navigate.Looks great so far.

Lots of drooling over here! Is there going to be a preview similar to how WindowBlinds previews the blind you have selected before applying it? I see the window on the left there but is that just a static image that never changes or is that a live preview of that particular dock?

"...since it is early there is no time estimate about release, nor about upgrading..."
what's meant by upgrading?
is this a simple update or is this going to be a whole new product (and so requiring a whole new payment)?

That is a good question. Historically what we have done is go back a certain number of months or a version and automatically give a free upgrade to users who purchased after a certain date or who own a particular version (in this example it might be 1.9). We are still evaluating how to do best do this for Object Dock, but for certain there will at the very least be an upgrade path for current users so they don't have to pay full price.

if it ain't broke don't fix it
seriously, i love you guys, but you keep doing things like this to me. first you send me 20% for a game i'd purchased a week before hand, then 50% off demigod but only valid till the day before i get paid. now, potentially, i'll have to pay to get the best of a product i only bought a couple of months ago...
i know you'll do the right thing. i hope so...
oh! forgot to say, w00t!!! update

ObjectDock+ is my main WinXP interface now, I have a couple of niggles with it but it has sucessfully replaced the taskbar, system tray, start menu (mostly) and totally uncluttered my desktop. I tried Fences but, whilst great, I found that I just didn't need it with ObjectDock+. So, I am really looking forward to an update.

My response was a little vauge at first. I was referring to WindowBlinds 7 and IconPackager 7, not Object Dock Plus 2.0. Object Dock Plus 2.0 BETA will be available later this year.
I updated my previous post. Sorry for any confusion.

Excellent! The interface is much improved! Great job, devs! Thanx for the peek, I.D.
The "How to edit your docks" suggests maybe a link to the Wiki also...which would be neat. This is a big step forward and as I've said in the forums, well worth waiting for.
