What Are Your Current Impressions of Windows 7?
Thursday, April 1, 2010 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing
So it’s been many months since Windows 7 was released to the public, and during my travels on the web, I have seen praise from so many people about how they are enjoying Windows 7. Some of these are even coming from Mac users which really should tell you something.
My experience has exceeded my initial expectations, and I enjoy using Windows 7 every single day. Performance has been outstanding on my main rig, which is obviously quite powerful, but I can say the same thing for my Acer Netbook which I also have Win7 installed on.
Obviously I run quite a few games and applications, and haven’t had one single issue with one, including older applications. On the customization side, having apps like Fences, ObjectDock, and WindowBlinds make the desktop experience that much better – especially in terms of organization.
Now that many of you have had quite a bit of time to use Windows 7, what are your current impressions so far?

I just ordered Windows 7 last week, but it still hasn't come yet.
I've been really looking forward to see how it runs on my PC.

The Hawk likes Windows 7, However, he feels that Microsoft should have named it Windows BlackHawk

Audiafox is unsure of how to reply to the Hawk regarding that oddly narcissitic grammar tense and suggestion.

Blame MS...they claim Windows 7 was MY idea ....

Well it was, wasn't it?.... MY idea. When Win 7 was still in beta, I remember reading the forums on MS' Win 7 page and seeing that several user ideas/suggestions were being adopted/considered.
Thing is, without doubt, Win 7 is by far the best OS MS has ever produced. I have been using it since the public beta and have been extremely happy with its performance, reliability and ease of use.
One thing that annoys me, however, is having to have public folders on a single user machine, having stuff I installed as Administrator assign portions of itself to a public folder. There are no other users on my machine... nor will there ever be, so the public folder is totally unnecessary.... superfluous, except that some software devs insist on putting stuff in there. For mine, all Windows installations should be single user by default, with the option to add other users IF required.

Is it me or has anyone noticed that it does seem to take Win7 a while to shutdown in comparison to XP(never used Vista). While I know the focus(in ads and such) has been on startup and coming out of hibernation speeds, which it does seem to do a tick faster than XP, but the shutdown takes about twice as long with basically the same amount of third party stuff running. Usually it's something not noticed, but I am one to stay in the room till I hear it totally shutdown just in case so I notice it regularly.

Foe me 7 shuts down just as quick as other OS I have used.

Win 7 shuts down almost instantly for me... vista took at least a minute

I think I found my issue with the shutdown speed. My Asus probe doesn't like to play nice and shutdown when told to. Sometimes it throws up the force shutdown dialogue. If i shut it down ahead of time Win7 shutsdown quite a bit quicker.

i will be getting it for my new computer shame they didn't make vista to be useful oh well at least they gave us somthing well worth it, hopfuly there won't be another vista or xp 64 anytime soon, apple seems to like failing as well on something new and useless aka ipad.
microsoft are not as good as apple with phones ipods but they do have more software and games, people seem to be not that smart on microsoft the platforms since viruses are mainly made for that.
it will be a while before they can replace xp entirely with win 7.

Fuzzy,
There's 2 things that covers drives that you might be having trouble with. One is powering down and the other is showing empty drives.
Powering down is in Advanced power setting.
Showing empty drives is in folder options under the view tab.
Open windows explorer, Alt + F to bring up the menu, choose tools, folder options. Click on the view tab and uncheck "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder".
