Getting to Know Stardock Central

Wednesday, July 11, 2012 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing

Stardock Central is here in beta form, but even though it is still being worked on, it’s a great way to download and update your various Stardock software apps (and some games) like WindowBlinds, Fences, DeskScapes, etc.  Stardock Central is very easy to use, but I’m going to give a quick overview in case you aren’t familiar with it.

First, get the free download from here.

As you can see the interface is pretty straightforward.  You can see any available updates for your apps, and the list of available software that you can download.  To download or update an app, just check the box and click the install button.  Very simple!

One question people have always asked is if there’s an easy way to find the expiration date of their subscription to either Object Desktop or WinCustomize.  You can now find that right inside Stardock Central.

If you need to see what software you have installed, and the version number, you can also find that very easily.

If you need additional options for Stardock Central, just click the icon in the screenshot below and you will enter the settings windows.  Here you can set a variety of options like enabling beta downloads, set file locations for downloads, and more.

Again, Stardock Central is a great way to manage your Stardock purchases.  If you need to access your software through the web, just visit download.stardock.com.

Looking forward to the games being included. Leo in WI's right about the clean, simple interface!

Great addition for getting SD products. Sometimes simple is the way to go.

Clean, small, light and easy to use. I couldn't ask for more than that.

I have to agree with the above replies.

The new SDC is simple to understand and easy to use, just can't ask for much more, well you could, but what would it be.

Finally I can see the SN#s for my Demon Assassin and Occulus downloads...

On a more serious note... you really should make a toolkit for indie developers so they can have their own version of "stardock central" and not be beholden to the big guys like Steam and Impulse.

That's not quite what I meant.

Using Desura still makes you beholden to Desura

Using the proposed toolkit would allow you to make and control your own independent, branded, version

Frankie, see the words "File Locations"?

This is where you'd choose where SDC archives its apps.

I found where it downloads the files to, but most of my stuff was installed directly from the store and I unfortunately did not save all of the installers. Goes with my neatness kick and sometimes I get too vigorous with the house cleaning.

Simple, clean, straightforward, piece of cake to use, self-updating... and unskinnable.

I like it, though.
