The PC of the future - The new desktop
Tuesday, April 14, 2020 by Frogboy | Discussion: Software Blog
This PC is using Windows 10. But not just Windows 10 on its own. It's been upgraded a bit with Object Desktop. That's what Object Desktop does. A lot of the things in Windows we see today first showed up in Object Desktop. A few examples include transparencies, shadows, gadgets, ZIP files as folders, GUI skinning, etc. There is a natural progression to the operating system.
On this screenshot I have Groupy, CursorFX, Fences, Start10 and a new app that hasn't been announced yet.
The PC of the future series is going to explore where we think the desktop is going. This PC has 64 CPU cores and 128 logical processors. It has 128 GB of memory and an extremely fast GPU. So what are we going to do with this hardware? That’s what this series will explore.
Edit: Additional screenshots below.

I hate to be the first to rain on your parade, but your desktop looks worse than the the Windows 10 default.

The PC of the future only needs fences and groupy evidently.

IconPackager? It needs an update. One of my favourites along with WB.
Is there a hidden message here?

Ok, so if he isn't using WindowBlinds, and there's a new as yet unannounced app coming........hmmmmm......
WindowBlinds replacement? I hope it's better. Can't tell it from that screenshot.

Yeah, I hope so too...Although my skinning is down at the moment, what would we do without a properly skinned OS right?

The screenshot is for the purpose of understanding customization of Windows through Object desktop and not to demonstrate any beautiful desktop setup, If I'm right.

What do you think the Windows 10 default desktop looks like?
What I am trying to say is that when being the CEO of a company selling customizing products for Windows, you could do better. But then again, difference of opinion has never been tolerated well on Stardock.

Yes, I would prefer that one over the hideous color combo on yours any day of the year. Is that impossible, you think? This is also how Windows 10 can look without any customization apps:

I am talking about functionality. I don't mind you having a difference of opinion. Do you?

Heck, just Start10 is better than the default Windows 10 desktop.
It's the additional functionality that matters though. Being able to make use of the power of a modern desktop. What someone finds "pretty" is in the eye of the beholder.
Then you build on that functionality:
Add modern, high DPI aware mouse cursors with CursorFX.
Integrate your data environment with your desktop with Fences.
Expand on the tab metaphor in web browsers to the OS with Groupy.
and so forth.
