What Would You Like to See in an Updated SkinStudio?

Friday, May 15, 2020 by Island Dog | Discussion: Software Blog

SkinStudio doesn't get as much attention from the general skinning consumer since it's primary focus is the creation of skins, but lets not forget its importance as it plays a big role in bringing us skins for WindowBlinds

Over the years we've tried to make SkinStudio easier for new users to start creating skins, while keeping the advanced editing available for our experienced skinners. With SkinStudio, you can skin as much or as little as you want of the interface. You can then use the skin for yourself, or share with thousands of others in the WindowBlinds gallery on WinCustomize.

SkinStudio takes on a task-oriented design where users can go step-by-step through each section of the skin and either edit the existing skin template, or replace them completely with an image you created in Photoshop or any other graphics program.

Now we know with all the changes to Windows and WindowBlinds itself over the past few years, that SkinStudio could use some attention. That's why we want to hear from our talented skinning community on what they would possibly like to see updated in future versions of SkinStudio.

Let us know your suggestions on what you'd like to specifically see updated in the comment section below.

Yes!!!! It's finally being looked at!

I would like to see only the Windows 10 areas in SkinStudio, nothing else. It would be great to have an actual complete Windows 10 interface image (or images if necessary), so that when you click on the area of the image you want to modify, it opens that area to be worked on in another popup type window showing all areas that can be modified for that image (import image, change text, change margins, add shadow, etc.). Then after updating that area it shows the changes you made automatically,

So great to see this absolutely needed software being looked at for improvement!

I agree with Tom, cause right now, I have to go through everything, and undo images that was include for Win 7/8, so it'd simplify it more, by making it Win 10 only, example: areas in "Jump List, and Preview Popup" aren't needed anymore with Win 10.  I'd like to see the ability to skin light/dark mode, and the ability to change the text accordingly,  Also, a more simplistic UI, I'm use to it now, but it'd be nice, and it would be ( in my opinion ) beneficial to newbies.

I'd like what they said, and for all the "bugs" "incorrect states" to be fixed.

I will skin WB if you make it easier to use SKS.

It would be nice to start with a Windows 10 Basic Startup Template, without those old sections from previous Windows versions or a cleanup button which automatically remove old Windows version sections. If I look at my skin through the code section, there are lots of section that I don't really know what it is doing there.

Thank you,

Basj

Make it for Windows 10 only, but keep the old version available.

I would like to see more areas being hauled over for ability of forcing transparency and/or putting images in them (Left side "folders area", windows background etc) I know there has been talk about it must be some "hacking" involved, but I really think that with enough inspiration, encouragement and thinking OutOfTheBox some of those things can be done.   I am now going to use and include an Open source/freeware Transparency app with my latest Blind, (Unfortunately it makes The Whole window Transparent, but I am skinning for that in mind   )

And bring back clickable preview.

Also add support for drag and drop.

In case you forgot, this was sks 4/5

Hey! Am I remembering wrong, or could we "grab and pull" painting margins in the preview in the old version?

I have so far to be satisfied with third party transparency apps, but it's been a while since I've played around with one so I'll give it a go.

I think it would be helpful to update the "Create a new skin" template to essentially replicate Win10.  I say this because one of the most frustrating parts of creating a new skin is you have to track down everything or else you have Diamond popping up here and there.

One of the big joys of Curtains is that a person can have a very decent skin by just making a few changes, it would probably be helpful to replicate that approach to some degree with SkinStudio so that any missed detail isn't so obnoxious.

Ironic how the very app we're using to build skins doesn't skin well.....

Should that be fixed?

I can for myself can say that i found SKS very difficult. I recently made an attempt at a windowblind but found navagation troublesome. I finally gave up cause there was so many areas to cover. I like the idea about a windows 10 basic template to work from. That way it allows one to skin just what they want.
