Windows 10 is the New Stable OS
Make an Older OS Look Modern with Start11
Thursday, May 4, 2023 by BradSams | Discussion: Start News
What feels like nearly an eternity ago (but was really only a couple of years back), Microsoft announced Windows 11 and started shipping it not long after that. One of the big changes, aside from the visual update, was that there would only be one major update per year.
This was a significant change from the Windows 10 era where the company was pushing two major updates per year. For the most part, it was well received within the Windows community - but as we are all now aware, the company has done the exact opposite.
Windows 10 Running Start11
Today, Microsoft is shipping feature updates whenever they want and it’s quite hard to keep track of whether a feature is in the canary, dev, beta, or release preview. If that wasn't tricky enough, they are also enabling users to be the first to receive updates within the stable branch as yet another way to test updates before they hit the wider general population.
Even though the update cadence for Windows 11 is headed towards a more chaotic state, there is a bit of a reprieve if you are ok with running Windows 10. As Paul Thurrott puts it: “Microsoft Finally Gave Us What We Wanted … But With Windows 10”.
Microsoft has stated that Windows 10, 22H2, will be the final feature update for the OS. This means that if you want to run a version of Windows that is fully supported and won’t be updated erratically, then Windows 10 is a viable option until its support ends in 2025.
What if you like the look of Windows 11, but want to stay on Windows 10? That can easily be accomplished with Start11 and WindowBlinds 11 (both of these apps can run on Windows 10). This also works exceptionally well if you are one of the many Windows 10 users who cannot upgrade to Windows 11 because your PC does not meet the baseline requirements.
For those of us who desire a stable version of Windows - without the trouble of trying to run an LTSC branch as your daily driver - Microsoft just delivered a big win for its users. Rolling back to Windows 10 may not be for everyone, as Microsoft will pester you quite a bit to upgrade to Windows 11, but if you truly want a supported Windows experience that doesn’t change, Microsoft finally has an answer for you.

That's exactly what I'm running and I'm quite happy with it. The only difference with me is I'm using Start11 but I have stuck with WindowBlinds 10 as I have WAY too many WindowBlinds skins (over 300), to upgrade to WindowBlinds 11 and have to reinstall all those skins again. Plus, I'm one of those people whose computer does not meet the minimum requirements to run Windows 11.

My system currently has an 'uptime' of 139 days 7 hours and 38 minutes ....so is arguably pretty stable.
It's Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit ...
Things tend to get really, really stable....once Microsoft butts out ...

I will keep the longest distance between me and this thread once I wrote this.

The canary Chanel is actually the starting point of Windows 12 beta. It just hasn't dropped in there yet. It is very strange how Microsoft is handling the transition so far.
I do think we are all wanting the next 2 moment releases to be done with already. We all know Microsoft is clearly gearing up for their next big release.

Precisely.

There's a lot I agree with there, as well.

I love to see W7 back. to me the most stable. Microshit ruined it for everyone. Just saying!

Made the mistake of installing Windows 11 on my Notebook. Unfortunately, it's too much work to make it work like Windows 7. So, it's garbage. Honestly, the only thing missing right now is quicklaunch bars. I depend on them and use them extensively. So, my other stuff doesn't get an upgrade :/.

I like and have to work with what is current (to offer support for work), so i am in the group of moving forward with the latest OS, and Win 12 when it arrives. Ways will be worked out to customise Win 12 also, and that is never going to change.
Jafo , i have a curious question, when you say "uptime' of 139 days 7 hours and 38 minutes" and call it Stable, what do you mean. It has never crashed, or bugged out.
If that is what you mean, My Win 11 Enterprise, has been stable with No crashes, Error screens etc.. since i installed it on my main machine since just after its launch. In other topics you said it was due to me using an Enterprise Edition, or that was the reason you said why i have had no issues, with updates, crashes and all other bad things. So I Guess my Win 11 Enterprise has an uptime of around 700 Days + and MS are still messing with it, but for me, all has been well.
Do not see the point in going back to an older OS, yes i have a Win 10 SSD still running, for comparison for Themes testing Borders etc.. to get them right when i Port Themes to Win 11, but i can not say it is in daily constant use anymore. I can understand running both Win 10 and 11, but going back to Win 10 Exclusively, for just a couple of years, then moving over to Win 11 again or 12 , this does not work for me. I think i will just end up with a bigger Multi Booting System, maybe having Win 10,11 and 12, all running. I have to agree with the masses, Win 11 is not as popular as MS Hoped, but for me, all has been well since i installed it, and i actually like it.
Someone has to to, hey.

The computer has not been turned off for 139 days .....not by me nor by meddling frm MS...

OS install on original drive in this machine was 2015....so OS has 'existed' active for 3000 odd days....
Edit...I should add I got a spike about a year and a half ago ...brain fade...I had missed protecting my audio system via the UPS .....pickled 1 channel of the audio...the CPU and the GPU [jury is out on the MoBo...but I'd replaced that as well].
That led to a downtime of a few weeks and a hit in the hip pocket the wrong side of $1000 [but now have a later gen GPU] ...and the new Audio is likewise better [and protected]....

I've Got You, i am a power user, with my own forum and my job, that usually means i am at my desk for around 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. I do switch it off for those remaining few hours each day as i have spent a fortune on Hardware, so not going to leave all that money running 24 hours a day, as it would need upgrades much sooner than normal. Wear And Tear goes up the longer it is left running.
What benefit is there to leaving your setup switched on at all times.
EDIT: I have several Laptops i use for some stuff, an I3, and I5 and a I7. I do all the risky stuff on those, as we all have to take a leap in the dark now and again, and do something we have never done before, but i would never use my4SSD Multi Booting System for experimental stuff, just not worth risking all that money, although having the 4 SSDs on multi boot, it can make it easier if one drive goes wrong, to get out of bother.

Power consumption is pretty low...high capacity PSU doesn't break a sweat - fan's almost never on...except on boot...only fans ticking over is 'dumb' tower fans and the CPU ticking over...platter drives are all green so shut themselves down...so I just switch off the monitor and look at the pretty lights....
There's a school of thought that frequent hard-cycling electronics does more damage ...bit similar to the way Taxis get high mileage from their motors.
Keeping an 'eye' on 8 million users isn't a part time thing anyway...and certainly not a single timezone thing....

I agree with Naroon that Windows 11 is a fine operating system and there really is no upside to downgrading to Windows 10 if on windows 11. To me Windows 11 is a lot like Windows 8, it has some gui quirks that need fixing through software customizations, i.e. start 11.
Hardly anyone dares defend Windows 8, but I will. It had one of the worst start button integration ever imagined. But dare I say this.... Once I put on start 8 to have Windows 8 start menu returned then Windows 8 became a better opertaing system then Windows 7.
I do however concure with bradsams argument regarding how Microsoft now updates the OS. There is now 4 channels and that is ridiculous. Also, 4 moment updates per year is not better then the one big update per year. I totally understand how the constant updates, changes and different channels can cause stability issues with third party software such as start 11, windowblinds 11, and even some of the competition out there. Everyone needs to update their stuff just as much as Microsoft updates their OS. Hopefully they tone it down a bit once Windows 12 hits the market.

Hi Phoenix, long time no speak mate, how are you.
As i now run Themes Mostly, my friend who works alongside me, said, wouldn't it be easier and less work sticking with Win 10, as all Themes work well with that OS. My answer was a firm NO, my reasons being, yes it is easier to run themes on Win 10, but we stop learning how to customise for newer and more recent OSs like Win 11 and 12 when it gets here. as it did mean a learning curve, and jump into the unknown. At first my mate was reluctant, but once we had a grip on changing those things MS like to change, back to the way we wanted it, he was 100% on board, and has suggested we no longer work on Win 10 Themes, and move over to Win 11 Themes exclusively, or at the very least, Update all our back catalogue and Port them to Win 11.
Windows 10 does have a place in my 4 SSD Multi Booting System, as its needed to reference things and compare, but as it is an older OS, that is its worth to me .Going Backwards, is not an option, especially as Win 12 is not really too far away now. I really like Win 11 , always have, as i have not come upon the issues others have, for me its been super stable, and has given me zero issues, even the recent update posted about effecting those who like to customise, and use StartAllBack, messing up their PCs, did not effect me and was smooth running.
Jafo.
Not convinced about leaving a setup running 24 /7 is in any way beneficial to the hardware, spent far too much money to even consider it. Your Example about Taxis. Have you ever listened to one of those high milage taxis, they all sound FUBAR(google it), and totally Knackered out, not a future i have in mind for my Hardware, seems like a high price to pay, to look at some pretty lights Bud . A Poundland Toy can give you that .

Not convinced about leaving a setup running 24 /7 is in any way beneficial to the hardware,
OK...heat cycling causing fretting is a real 'thing'. It's the reason so many components are positively 'locked' in, such as ram sticks in particular...and then there's particulate corrosion of contacts from heat cycling...you can ask NASA about that one...and why they lost early satellites simply because contacts were too pure and welded shut.
I knew one driver who always had 351s ....was on his third motor .... the first 2 simply ran mostly without dramas for 300,000 miles each...then he'd chuck in a new one..... so it's a valid comparison.
I really don't need to google FUBAR ...I knew the term long before google did .... or the internet ...or PCs...

I have no plans to send my set up into orbit Jafo, and i understand your love of older things like Win 7, so no call to NASA needed today. I understand heat cycling, and Particulate Corrosion well enough, but i am still not sold on leaving a PC left on and running. Wear and tear effects all things, even if your School Of Thought suggests other wise.
Impressed you understood FUBAR before Google and the internet.
Interested how your own Win 11 journey is going lately, must be good to get some hands on hours on that OS. Or will you be sticking with Win 7 or Indeed 10 as per the topic title. We all need to adapt to change in the computing world, it moves so fast, so our skillsets must adapt too, me for one am glad we have new OSs periodically, with new challenges to face, especially the customising of said new OSs. Who does not love a challenge Bud.

Yes please I like the computer to work for me, not the other way around.
