Is it time for Stardock to hire a PR firm?

Friday, March 18, 2005 by MSethWeisberg | Discussion: OS Customization

For those that know me and those that don't I have been a loyal user of windowblinds since the 2.x days and iconpackager since 1.x. I finally decided to buy a subscription to object desktop a little less then a year ago and it was a great move. I love using desktopX, right click, and enhanced dialogs. To say the least I like the software you put out and I have found myself defending those software titles on more then one forum over the last few months.

And yet I can't figure out why that is? The prices are not expensive, for the most part they work as advertised, most programs have small memory footprints, and small installation sizes so I don't see what the problem is. And yet on a lot of customization forums Stardock continues to get bad press with the exception of WC.com.

For the record I am not a graphic artist nor have I ever created a skin but I love customizing XP and I am active in many forums including DA, Neowin, WC, A-S, Aerosoft, etc..and I continually find myself having to defend my passion for the software and in the process acting like a troll.

This has to end, it can't be good for the company and it surely can't be good for its members to continually have to defend why they use it. I say that some money should be set aside to the development of a PR position within the company to promote the software and rid itself of the negative attitudes that a lot of 'skinners' seem to have developed toward Stardock.

Your opinions please.......

Yes, the software is superb, works well most of the time, is a definite enhancement to Windows for customization & because of what Object Desktop, Icon Packager & Windowblinds can do I bought it all....BUT there are hassles in dealing with WinCustomize & Stardock as well......the submission process for a simple screenshot can be degrading & variable at best....case in point is an update I did last night about 2am Atlantic time for "My Laptop" screenshot....2 hours later I received 3 e-mails within 2 minutes of each other....the first 2 explaining "it didn't meet Stardock's guidelines" & was rejected".....a similar incident occurred last spring on an update.....when I saw that I was logging into my Wincustomize homepage to delete every screenshot & permanantly pack my bags;then the 3rd arrived "Congratulating" me for its acceptance. After the initial hassle last spring on an update & the subsequent purchase of FX that worked fine in freeware & is supposed to be compatable with Windows 2000, has glitches, amoung others;freezes the system & isn't compatable when Windows Media is running or when one moves a window while it is running & in working with Tech via e-mails & Jake couldn't figure out why the error logs were saying what they were & forwarded the problem to the what I believe he called "Enhanced Tech, as an experiment I waited to see how long it would take for resolution........4 months went by with no response........& yes I see many negative comments about Stardock on CNet from former users, I finally requested a refund to my AMEX when coming across all the letters from Jake in my "Correspondence" folder, I finally e-mailed a request for a full refund: someone e-mailed back in a point blank flat response unsigned wanting a full explanation of the problem along with my credit card #.....for $20.oo I couldn't be bothered & wrote it off. In closing let me say that I well understand the negative impression consumers have of Stardock & WinCustomize....wonderful software that most of the time delivers what is written about it on the Stardock home page, but with all the hassles I wouldn't recommend either.

Screenshots are moderated for appropriate content....that's a condition of upload....and also there can be an issue of copyright if said screenshot includes an unobstructed view of another person's wallpaper image...that 'may' be subsequently extracted and re-used as a wall....it's a distribution-rights issue....

someone e-mailed back in a point blank flat response unsigned wanting a full explanation of the problem along with my credit card #.....for $20.oo I couldn't be bothered & wrote it off.

In all fairness...'couldn't be bothered & wrote it off' is not a fault attributable to Stardock or its products.....
