Stardock & Windows Vista

A sneak preview..

Sunday, July 24, 2005 by Frogboy | Discussion: Windows Vista

Windows Vista may be the most extensible version of Windows yet.  With its rich new set of APIs that allow users to create unique applications quickly and that the interface has been moved away from GDI (the old drawing method) to a whole presentation system that makes use of 3D hardware acceleration, developers will be able to make Longhorn shine very so brightly.

Stardock's goal on Windows Vista will be much the same as it was on Windows XP -- to enhance and expand the feature set of the OS.  The difference this time is that Microsoft is giving us a lot more tools to play with.

Object Desktop, Stardock's premier suite of desktop enhancement programs will be getting a host of new features in order to enhance the Windows Vista experience through customization and new abilities.  At the same time, Stardock will continue to enhance its support for Windows XP users as well.

For example, WindowBlinds 5, which goes into beta this Fall, can support Aero-Glass type effects on Windows XP (see screenshot, that's Windows XP).  DesktopX will take widget and gadget making to the next level on Windows Vista.  DesktopX allows users to visually create mini-applications using an object-oriented interface.  But under the covers, DesktopX creates XML and Javascript/VB Script files.  In Windows Vista, our goal will be have DesktopX generate XAML code and hence, on a Avalon-enabled system to make use of everything Avalon has to offer.  And on systems in which Avalon isn't, on, DesktopX can use its own internal DirectGUI engine.

Windows Vista, so far, looks to have more potential for enhancement and extension by third-parties than any Microsoft OS before it.  It's built on a solid foundation and Microsoft really does seem to have taken the view of trying to create the OS as a platform as opposed to the OS as a application bundling opportunity (ala Apple).  We'll keep you posted.

We are also working in conjunction with TweakXP on a program called TweakVista. TweakVista will let Windows Vista users tweak the heck out of their new OS.

Interesting. Is this expected to be part of Object Desktop?

Stardock will still support XP right? I'm not going to upgrade to Vista any time soon after it comes out.

I've recently seen some Vista screens showing the 'Areo' style title bars, but unlike the WB5 versions screens shown here, it also slightly blurs whatever is behind it. Will WB support this feature as well? Any comments on this would be appriciated.

WB 5 won't support it on XP but it will on Vista.

Brad, It's obvious that there are going to be some big changes to the way windowblinds and skinstudio operate. Everyone is going on about the Aero glass effect, from what i've read there is going to be a higher level of graphics above Aero glass. Can you give us some indication how windowblinds and skinstudio will handle these graphics, what kind of program / file format are we going to need to produce these graphics.

I do appreciate that you've got plenty of work on your hands but I'm sure we are all eager for any news you can give us. Perhaps you could set up a work in progress news letter or something similar.

I don't think there'll be much change. Certainly not for the translucency - probably all you need is a TGA file for that. As for the rest . . . it's still to be seen exactly what will be supported, and how, so it's rather hard to know things like details of file formats! You will probably still be using SkinStudio to edit them, though.

I am using the Windows Vista Beta2 on a totally different drive from my XP, and trying to get use to it. So far I like it better than XP, the install went great and I don't have as much broken crap as I did in XP. I have not installed any of my Object desktop stuff yet. My question is does any of this stuff (stardock) run on Vista? Since the public viewing, I have run across several vendors who have upd their sites with beta software that runs on Vista. I haven't anything here or any mention of what runs with Vista. I saw some opening comments regarding wb5. WB5 was around before Vista, which I upd to, so I know wb5 wasn't created for Vista. Who knows WB5 may been the culpruit that made my XP run haywire. The bottom line is are you testing the vista, are there going to be some upds as to what part of this desktop stuff works or not work. System requirement for running Object Desktop is still the same, saw no mention of Vista.

Short answer is 'yes', but I doubt anything at all will be released to the public before Vista actually ships to the public.  The OS would really NEED to be out of 'beta' itself first....
