Wii at E3

Tuesday, May 9, 2006 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing

Today Nintendo showed some more of their Wii.  The next console from Nintendo that is.

The Wii will be available in the fourth quarter of the year, most likely around the holiday season.  While they did not announce the price there are many people that are speculating that the Wii will be around $199.

One of the most impressive parts of the conference was the Wii controller.  It was best demonstrated with a game in which the user controlls such things as a sword.  Check out the videos.

Many games for both the Wii and Gamecube were announced today also.  Zelda, Super Mario Galaxy, and Sonic Wildfire are just a few of the titles that were mentioned.

Check out Gamespots coverage of the Wii at E3.

Its really incredible what this brings to the world of gaming. There is even a little speaker in the Wii-mote controller so you can for example hear the arrow zinging from you to the screen. The wireless controller also has rumble, which was severely lacking in the Wavebird wireless controller.
I think Nintendo has a hit on its hands. It also should bring in people who traditionally have stayed away from video games, and bring others back who have left. Which is one of its goals.
I'm in the camp who played them a lot but slowly drifted away because of the lack of innovation, but also because games had gotten so complicated that to have any fun you had to play them a lot to get good at them. Many of us would rather do other things, and simply pick up a game for fun and not have to practice a lot to get really good at it. Of course some of us simply suck at games, so its nice that Nintendo is planning "easier" games
I could care less about MS or Sony and there supermachines, the average person cannot afford those behemoths.

I was talking to the manager at EB Games today.  He told me most people are more interested in the Wii than the PS3.  He said the high price of the PS3 is not impressing many people.

Yup Sony is definitely pissing off people. They think if its got everything but the kitchen sink it will make people want it more. Then they introduce a lame limited motion controller to attempt to take away from the Wii. People see that as copycat right away. Also what does Sony have that MS doesn't already? It doesn't seem like they bring anything to the table new to gaming.

The more I hear about the Wii, the more I like it. Gamers are getting older too you know. We are in our late 20's and early 30's. Can we play a casual game? Does it have to do all that other stuff?

I am still a fan of the PS2 and PSP (portable), but the PS3 is more of a whole entertainment system than a gaming system. I think people just are not ready for that yet. The XBOX might be complex, but at least it is focused more on games than movies. If I want my XBOX to be a media center, I buy the parts for it later and hook it up.

PS3 does have some nice games though...
