Using Object Desktop Manager

Thursday, May 1, 2014 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing

If you are a subscriber to Object Desktop, it gives you a bunch of great applications like WindowBlinds, DeskScapes, Start8, ModernMix, and more.  We also make a download and update manager specifically for Object Desktop users so you can easily manage the apps available to you with your subscription.  I wanted to give you a look at Object Desktop Manager, and how you can take full advantage of it.

Downloading ODM

You can find the download to Object Desktop Manager in your Stardock account.  Here you can also download your apps individually if you need to do so.  Just download and install the app and enter your Stardock account credentials.

Installing and Updating Apps

Installing and updating your Object Desktop apps is the main focus of Object Desktop Manager.  Once ODM is setup you will see a list of all the applications available for you to download and install.  All you have to do now is check which apps you want and click the install button.  The installation will proceed and you’ll just follow a few prompts, and soon you will have all these cool apps ready for your desktop.

Updating app is very similar.  As you can see in the screenshot below there’s an update for ModernMix, so I just need to check the box on that and install.  When a new update is available Object Desktop Manager can notify you via the system tray, and you can even configure ODM to download the updates.

Managing Your Object Desktop Apps and Subscriptions

Not sure if you have a particular app installed?  Need to uninstall it for some reason?  No problem.  Just click ‘Installed’ at the top of the ODM app and you’ll see a list of all the apps you currently have installed.  You can even launch the software from here or uninstall apps from here as well.

Clicking the ‘Subscriptions’ link you can see your Object Desktop subscription information like your expiration date and product key.  If you have a subscription to WinCustomize.com, you can also see the expiration date for that too.  From here you can press the Extend button and be taken to our store to renew/extend your subscription.

Additional Settings

The default settings in Object Desktop Manager will work for most users, but if you need to change some of the configuration you can do that in the settings window.  Just click the gear icon in the upper-right of ODM and click Settings.  Here you can configure a variety of other settings like showing beta versions of app, launching ODM at Windows start, update check time and auto-downloading of updates, file locations, and more.

This looks great!  A couple of questions though.  Does it support resume on file transfers in the event you have spotty internet or do you have to start completely over if your connection breaks?  Also any chance that this will support non-Steam versions of Stardock games in the future?

It's unlikely as this is for Object Desktop apps, and that most of our games will be on Steam for the foreseeable future.

I screwed up with this when I had to reinstall Windows. I didn't realize how it had changed from the old one and did not save the the actual install (exe) files from the apps from ODN. Since my sub had expired , I was only able to download the premium skins I had payed for (My Colors, Premium Skins, Master Skins) and I was able to download ObjectDock but none of the other apps that come with ODN.

Be sure to save your installation files (and updated installation files)!!!!!!!!!!

Not to rain on the parade, but I've noticed with ODM the same problem I've encountered with SDC - it doesn't correctly recognize or 'see' all the software already installed (true on more than one rig here).  I've therefore avoided using it and just use the MyAccount page to do updating.

I'm not having any of the above problems, but one that I do have is, when set to notify me of updates, it pops up sometimes saying there's an update when there isn't.

I noticed the same thing before my reinstall of windows. I didn't know if it was ODM, my PC, or what causing it.

Something is missing here.  I downloaded and installed the Object Desktop Manager (twice) on Windows 8.  When setup completes the ODM launches and can be used.  But it doesn't register itself in Windows as a program or application, and it doesn't even list itself as an installed app in its own list of installed Stardock apps.  Once it is closed there seems to be no way to open it again except to find the setup file and execute that.  Surely there should be some better way.  Please respond.

I'm running it on windows8 and it's showing here.. Have you tried running the installer in admin mode?

I subsequently found it on the modern interface start page (I had been looking in the traditional Start/Control Panel/Programs and Features list).  I'm a committed desktop workstation guy and with Start8 installed I rarely visit the so-called "modern" side and its mishmash of 1000 colorful toys.  But that's the only place it showed up after installation.

Hello . My ODM stopped showing every thing  in any of the tabs. No installed programs, nothing. I'm glad though that Windowblinds and Deskscapes work.

Thanks for any help.

Hello Skinit,

Please try logging out of ODM and then back in. After logging in, if your titles are still "missing", please put a support ticket in so we can look further into this issue.

Prior to submitting a ticket, running our SupportTool would be a great help, as it will provide us with some insight into the issue you're encountering.

Ok logging out and in again worked but it says I'm not subscribed to Wincustomize (was wondering why all the ads)  I'll have to re-subscribe I guess. Thank you for your help.

I use an SSD with limited space as my OS drive (C:\). Is there any way for me to have the ODM install programs to, say, an E:\ drive?

My problem WAS that none of my programs were showing.

You helped my find out why. Needed to log out and back in.FIXED.

Now the program showed that I don't have a Wincustomize subscription.

I've always been a member. OK I bought a new WinCustomize subscription but it

didn't show I'm subscribed.  The advertizements are really getting on my nerves.

A while back I fell down and broke my hip. I was in a nursing home for a month!(HELL)

Thanks for any help. Thanks

I don't see you having an active WinCustomize Subscription. If you recently purchased one you'd need to contact support with your order number and any other relevant information.

Otherwise you can renew here: https://www.wincustomize.com/shop

How about a bank statement ?

Thanks

When you purchase something from our store, you should receive an email with your order number and order information.  That is the information you would need to send to support.
