very nice! its subtle but still has enough motion to make it worthy of using up some system resources.

I dont know why, but these flying through space type dreams eat my cpu up too much. shoots it to 100% and stays there. hopfully this will stop once the full version comes out and they fix the vid card problems. Nice dream though, really like it.

wiro, yes, I've been tinkering with a blue nebula, and possible a fire nebula where the colors are a orange fire color!

This dream screams for multiple colors to fit everyones tastes.

this dream is so sweet.. the idea is great, i do agree that either there be different colors or have the nebulae change colors as you fly through it..you do great work and can't wait to see more..

Can you say 100% on a 2.0GHz Turion64 proc? I can. I don't understand why people design these dreams knowing they have a lot of CPU utilization... some people have laptops you know! It does look good though.

I don't understand why people run vista ultimate on slow PCs/laptops..

this dream runs great and i like to thx again

lol, just because we dont have the bleeding edge of laptops, (mine is only a year old) does not mean we should not beable to enjoy this stuff. I am not criticising the dream. I just wish they did a better job using my vid card instead of my cpu.

more collors indeed, it is a great concept.

My Performance values are as follows:

CPU: 4.0
Memory: 4.1
Graphics: 4.4
Gaming Graphics: 4.3
Hard Disk: 4.5

How the fug do you figure that's slow? Anything less then 4.0 and I wouldn't be running Vista, but 4's across the board is not slow by any means. Just for comparison a freaking P4 3.0GHz HT proc runs a 4.2 in CPU speed on the performance values.

My guess is that the majority of the makers of these dreams have either HT or Dual Core procs and hence see 1/2 the speed costs that those of us with single core/non HT procs see because their procs split the taxation of the proc.

And I didn't say it didn't run on my laptop. It runs without a hitch, it's just that I'd rather not have my fan roast my lap because it's on full blast due to the high clock-cycles. DeskScapes does not run in the background people!!!

This could also be tweaked/recolored to make a nice "Flying through a thunderstorm" dream.

JRSCCivic98,

Here is something to try. Take a look in the following folder:
C:\ProgramData\Stardock\DeskScapes\ExtractedData

This folder contains extracted .dream videos and you should see a folder that starts with Nebula Flight. Look under this folder and find the Nebual.wmv file. Run this in Window Media Player and see what your CPU load is. How does it compare to when it's your desktop background?

Nice... Ok, found the file and played it. Windowed or fullscreen, the CPU utilization is only at about 75%. Better, but not exactly where others have been. I've got some dreams that hit about 20-30% CPU utilization. So, it is the codec you have it in or what? I wish ATI hadn't stopped development of their Mobility driverset. Damn them... it may even be a driver issue, but I don't have anything more current then Catalyst 7.2 for x700. Hope this helps in you optimizing this dream... it's really good. It just needs an NCC-1701D navigating around in it. OMG, did that just come out of me.

Edit: OK, check this out... if I set the video to my background then the CPU is again at only 70%. Whatever it is it's either DeskScapes doing this or something else in the Dream causing the 100% when using this.

It's most likely do to the fact that it's a wmv video. wmv has better compression, but uses more CPU. It's also has a lot of movement with very little of the screen staying exactly the same.

Hum, why didn't you use MPEG? Would it have been that much bigger?
TheMasterBaron
Comment #18 Saturday, April 21, 2007 12:02 PM
I tried to encode this in MPEG2 and every attempt resulted in a 50MB+ file. The only way I could get a reasonable size was to encode it as DVD quality. Thats 720x480 interlaced. Basically its 1/4 the resolution of this WMV and even after lowering the quality that much, the MPEG2 file was still 6MB bigger.

This is fantastic.  The main gotcha obviously is that because it's super high resolution and a WMV it will use a lot of CPU power to decode the video. Also, some video cards don't support anything over 1080p in WMV.
