Well, the docklet uses MS Wireless API to retrieve the WiFi Data, I don't know if in your setup tha API will not retrieve the information. I have a Ralink WiFi adapter in my desktop & an Intel WiFi adapter in my laptop... I use windows configuration utilities, so I do not know if using 3rd party ones will case such a problem... could you test it out by configuring your system to use MS configuration instead of the 3rd party ones? I do not think the VPN client has enything to do with that, since you need to stablish a WiFi connection before initiating a VPN session (which creates a tunnel on the already stablished WiFi connection).
Installing the MS Wireless Lan API resolved my issue where the docklet wasn't showing up at all. I am now able to add it to my dock on WinXP SP2 machine. However... After I configured it with the (only) Wifi adapter it detected on my laptop, and connect to our WAP, the docklet still shows "Disconnected" status. Could this be related to the fact that I'm using a 3rd-party utility for managing wireless connectivity (ThinkVantage Access Connections) instead of using Windows' built-in wireless management tools? Or perhaps it has to do with me also using FortiClient for VPN and Firewall?

I have added some basic code to show the External IP Address associated to the current connection... this is not really related to the Wireless API, nor to the WinSock or other Windows API. What I actually did was to incorporate some code from my URL monitor Docklet to load a web site (right now I hardcoded checkip.dyndns.org) to retrieve the External IP Address.
I have not jet uploaded the updated Docklet (since I think some customization options should be included, like setting the desired web site, port and web page), but right now I would like to have some help on testing this out outside my development environment... should you like to test the updated component please download the DLL only update from my site WiFi Info Docklet Updated Test DLL and send me feedback on it.
Simply overwrite de WinFiDocklet.dll (under WiFi Docklet folder) with the included one. After that whenever "Detailed information" is selected the External IP Address info should be shown at the bottom.
I assume so; I used to use one of those gadgets, as well, until I got OD and I turned SideBar off. I never looked into how it obtained the ext. IP, but if that's how it did so, I assume the same method would work fine for the docklet, too

By far the best working, easiest to use, and most reliable WiFi meter out there. Thanks for developing this outside the SySstats system. Those docklets never work right on my system. Incredible job. InanimateOne

ey fedroponce, i downloaded your docklet (which is awesome!) but my signal strength does not go beyond 60% (and it doesn't go past three bars...never did). used it with my router at home and at wifi spots but same result. tried moving it right beside my router...same result. any ideas? thanks a lot!

Well... I just simply translate the values returned by the WIFI API to an image (since the WiFi API returns a number 1-100), are you runnin it under XP or Vista? What values are being returned by other windows monitoring apps (preferably the OS included ones?)

Vista. it's got full bars when i check it under "wireless network connection" (if not 5 bars, 4). that should be at least around 80% right? not that it's compromising my internet use, just that it's kind of bugging me that i never see it go beyond 60% (but i do see it go below that from time to time). what do you think? thanks.

Not really sure... maybe a rounding issue... let me double check the image selecting code to look for any hidden bug.
